The Adventures of Pedal-Paddle
December 2003

Jay Perdue - Owner of Pedal-Paddle

This month is the craziest entry yet, and that’s saying a lot since we’ve sailed Pedal-Paddle in 30 mph winds and white water ‘rafted’ Pedal-Paddle on rivers!

We took Pedal-Paddle to Florida this last month. We had a convention in Orlando so Vicki, my son Jesse and I loaded up the convention stuff and extra Pedal-Paddles

and headed out. The weather was beautiful and soon we were Pedal-Paddling on lakes in the Orlando area. I wonder if the folks of Florida know how good they’ve got it. We peddled around the lake a couple miles then launched and paddled back on the lake as fish darted under our pontoons. The winter water was undisturbed and clear. I enjoyed it so much I repeated the trip three times! Each time folks would wave from shore and kids would run along following me as best as they could with shouts and points at the new water toy.

On the way back to Texas we stopped in at Ft. Walton beach and that’s where it got crazy. I’ve wanted to get Pedal-Paddle in the Ocean forever. It was late in the afternoon when we arrived, but it took just minutes to unload #1 and launch into the surf. The three to four foot waves were breaking in a nice curl. I paddled straight into them. The first one seemed to knock me back a bit, but I just kept paddling and I broke through the surf surprisingly easy. I found myself the only person on the water and it was relatively calm and wonderfully clean. Fish, jelly fish, and rays were easily seen below me and a shallow bump (15’ I would guess) in the ocean floor even brought starfish and sand dollars into view.

Then it was late and the sun was going down. I could see the possibility of a tumble in the cold water, so I paddled pretty hard and straight for the store. The swells rose up and my Pedal-Paddle nosed down. I moved quickly off the seat to the back and before I knew it I was surfing! Surfing a bicycle! It was super stable and super fun! Until next time!

God Bless,
Jay Perdue
